Comment choisir entre Another, Other ou The Other ? 

Another, other ou The other; êtes-vous sûr de connaitre les différences qui caractérisent ces trois mots anglais ? ANOTHER

On utilise another avec un nom singulier dénombrable qui n’est pas spécifique. Que signifie « non spécifique » ? Cela signifie qu’il nous importe peu de savoir exactement de quelle autre unité du nom mentionné vous parlez ; vous faites simplement référence à une autre unité.

Une astuce pour se rappeler quand vous devez utiliser another est de se souvenir de l’article indéfini (a/an) en anglais. Si vous pouvez utiliser l’article indéfini, vous pouvez utiliser another !

Par exemple : He spoke to a person. This makes complete sense. Therefore, we can say: He spoke to another person

OTHER

On utilise another avec un nom dénombrable pluriel ou un nom indénombrable et non spécifique. Les règles sont ici similaires à celles d’autre. Dans ce contexte, other est utilisé pour parler de quelque chose qui n’est pas spécifique en ce sens que l’unité dont nous parlons importe peu, nous parlons simplement d’une autre unité du nom pluriel ou indénombrable que vous avez mentionné.

Nous pouvons appliquer la même astuce que nous avons utilisée pour another à l’utilisation de other. Ici, si nous n’avons pas besoin d’utiliser l’article indéfini devant le nom, nous pouvons utiliser other ! Rappelez-vous que nous n’utilisons pas l’article indéfini (a/an) devant les noms pluriels ou indénombrables.

Par exemple : She spoke to an people. Here, an doesn’t make sense. People is plural. So, we can say: She spoke to other people. 

THE OTHER

The other est utilisé pour préciser quelque chose. On utilise the other en combinaison avec un nom spécifique, qui peut être singulier, pluriel, dénombrable ou non dénombrable. Par conséquent, the other peut être utilisé avec n’importe quel nom.

Quand utilise-t-on the other ? Il est utilisé pour faire référence à quelque chose de spécifique. Nous spécifions exactement de qui ou de quoi nous parlons. Il fait référence à une unité spécifique du nom mentionné. Nous savons exactement de qui ou de quoi le locuteur parle !

La dernière astuce de la leçon d’aujourd’hui concerne les cas où nous devons utiliser the other. Tout comme pour décider quand utiliser un autre ou une autre, nous pouvons utiliser un article pour déterminer quand nous devons utiliser the other. Cependant, ici nous utilisons l’article défini – the. Lorsque nous pouvons utiliser the comme article devant le nom, nous pouvons utiliser the other !

Exemple d’utilisation dans un texte en anglais

The other day I went to the furniture store. My husband and I just bought a new house and we had to buy some things to furnish the house. I had a very difficult time because I didn’t like many of the pieces that the vendor was showing us.

First, we asked to look at bedroom furniture. When our house was built, the builders didn’t put any closets in the house. This means that we had to look for bedroom furniture with lots of cabinets or storage space to hide things! The employee brought out a very big and very modern catalog first. I asked him to bring out another catalog because I do not really like modern furniture. I know I’m not fashionable but I prefer much more classic items. He found another, more traditional catalog to look at. My husband and I took our time looking at all the options available. We were both completely overwhelmed! We were surprised because we couldn’t find anything we wanted. We asked the employee to take out theother catalog again. We went through it very carefully, taking time to chat about each option we liked. However, we couldn’t reach a consensus. We asked the vendor if he had any other catalogs from other companies to look at. He sighed and told us: “Yes, but you guys are complicating your life way too much.” He then handed us another catalog.

The moment we opened the catalog we knew we were going to find something we liked. It was modern, but not too modern. We found something we liked relatively quickly. Now we reached another enormous problem: what color should we choose? My husband loves very bright colors while I favor much more traditional colors. I like wood while my husband prefers bright colored doors. I was so frustrated that I didn’t want to make another decision. I told my husband that he could choose any color he wanted. I was going to start looking for the other pieces of furniture we needed.

Since the original employee had walked away, leaving us alone, I looked for anotherperson to help us. It seemed as if no one wanted to help! I guess the original employee told everyone how much of a pain in the neck we were. However, we needed to buy other furniture, apart from the bedroom. So, another person came over to help us out.

This choice was much easier. We needed to get a couch and I was certain about what I needed; I wanted a purple couch that fit perfectly into the corner of my living room. I brought the measurements with me and the employee helped me find the ideal couch in the showroom. We walked around for five minutes before I saw it – the perfect couch! However, it was bright red. Now, I know that red, black and white are in fashion right now but I was certain about what I wanted. I asked him if he had the same couch in anothercolor. He told me no, but he immediately brought out the book with color samples. He told me that the factory could make the couch in whatever color I wanted. I chose a deep purple fabric with black designs on it.

I thanked the vendor and I went to find my husband. I couldn’t believe it! He had chosen to look at another catalog with bedroom furniture. I was shocked. We were back to round one.
